Matra Erömü is a significant provider of domestic energy supplies, especially energy from lignite coal. Located in the north-east of Hungary, Mátra runs the opencast Lignite Mine Bükkábrány. As the shovel-and-truck operation for overburden (4 to 5 mio. cbm per year) was highly capital intense, Mátra was seeking ways to realise efficiencies and cost reduction programmes.
We were appointed as lead engineer and consultant to realise the tendering, purchase and installation of a new compact bucket wheel excavator. Our role included the preparation of concept and basic engineering designs as well as expediting throughout construction and implementation phase. We also produced tender documents, preparation of a cost estimate and a selection and qualification of suppliers. During construction we supervised regular construction audits and factory acceptance tests for key components.
As one of the world’s most experienced operator of continuous opencast mines, RWE played a key role in the successful realization of this project in Hungary. We helped transfer knowledge of international practices and standards in the areas of heavy equipment and continuous operation in opencast mines to the client.
