The time has come: less than two years after the foundation stone was laid in August 2018, RWE employees moved into the new RWE Campus at RWE Platz in the Altenessen district of Essen. Dr. Rolf Martin Schmitz, CEO of RWE AG, is delighted: "Despite the corona-related restrictions, we succeeded in completing the project on schedule. My special thanks go to all those involved in this project.” He continued: "The campus is the face of the new RWE. It stands for transparency, openness and a sustainable future. From here, we will continue to write the history of the company."
The now completed first construction phase comprises three of the four planned buildings and, together with the two existing buildings, forms the new RWE Campus. The existing buildings are the headquarters of RWE Supply & Trading, built in 2009, and the modernised administration building of the former Victoria Mathias Colliery, which RWE AG moved into in 2018. The RWE Campus will be finished with the completion of the second construction phase, enabling the employees of RWE Renewables to move from autumn next year. The now completed construction phase will include around 950 employees move in. After completion of the campus, a total of about 3,000 people will work on the campus, including the approximately 1,000 RWE Supply & Trading employees already working there today. "The new campus represents an important contribution to the sustainable urban development process of the northern part of our city. It is a link between the Elting district, which we are specifically promoting as part of "Innovation City Essen", the new university district and Nordstadt. I am delighted about RWE's commitment to Essen as a business location, which will be strengthened in the long term by the RWE Campus," emphasises Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen.
"Thanks to various room modules, the RWE Campus offers employees the opportunity to work flexibly and creatively. It thus meets the high requirements for the design of contemporary office workplaces and will also be certified with DGNB Gold for sustainable construction," explains Jan-Hendrik Goldbeck, Managing Partner of the construction company Goldbeck GmbH. Large windows allow a view to the outside, but also bring the outside in. A company restaurant and a cafeteria cater for the employees. The outside area is attractively designed with large open spaces and a green inner courtyard.
A small meeting arena will complete it after building D is finished. The capacities of the existing day-care centre for children and the fitness studio will be expanded. A DHL automated parcel station has been opened for employees in the car park in front of the kindergarten. In addition, a small supermarket will be located on campus in the future. The RWE Campus is well connected to public transport. "Throughout the entire construction phase, employees were able to actively participate in the design of the campus - from canteen furnishings to the choice of furniture - and express their views. Many of the employees' ideas have been implemented and this has helped them to look forward to moving into 'their' campus," summarises project manager Georg Petrich.
There will be no tiresome search for a parking space on the RWE campus: there are more than 2,000 car parking spaces and over 200 bike stands in underground and multi-storey car parks with a total of three access routes. Thanks to a single-space detection system, drivers will be able to easily find free e-charging and disabled parking spaces. In line with the purpose of the new RWE "Our energy for a sustainable life", the campus was built in a sustainable and future-oriented manner. Around 300 charging points for electric cars and e-bikes, additional power generation via a photovoltaic system and the installation of energy-efficient cooling and heating systems are proof of this.
