About her early career and the Accounting Graduate Programme at RWE Power AG

Location: Essen, Germany

What did I do before joining RWE?

After receiving my Abitur (higher education entrance qualification), I initially decided to train as a tax clerk. Subsequently, I took a Bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Münster and, building on this, completed a master's programme in finance, accounting, and taxes at the University of Göttingen. Owing to a keen interest in issues related to accounting, I decided to specialize in this field. During my studies, I also spent a semester abroad in Lille, France.

Why did I become a graduate at RWE?

I chose RWE Power AG because, being an integral part of the RWE Group, it is one of the leading companies in energy generation in Germany. Due to the energy transition, the company is facing major challenges entailing dynamism and change – coming on board here as a graduate is an exciting venture from day one!

Participating in the graduate programme has enabled me to gain a comprehensive overview of the various Accounting teams and their respective areas of responsibilities in a very short space of time. This makes the programme very varied and ensures swift learning progress. Moreover, it allows me to broaden my soft skills by working on projects and thus develop both personally and professionally.

It is also very helpful in building up a company network both within the Accounting department and across department boundaries.

What area are you currently working in?

At present, I work in the Financial Statements department in the field of lignite and nuclear energy. Here, I perform supporting duties and tasks on my own responsibility in day-to-day business and in accounting projects. This includes the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with Germany's Commercial Code (HGB) and the IFRS, but also answering accounting questions concerning, e.g., the implementation of new IFRS standards.

How is the graduate programme at RWE Power AG structured?

During the 18-month graduate programme, I work in different Accounting departments. An assignment abroad lasting several months is also part of the programme. Furthermore, I have the option of putting in a station in an accounting-related commercial department – such as Controlling – and I am involved in cross-departmental projects as well. In addition, I receive assistance by a mentor and the HR department during the entire time. The graduate programme also includes a supporting programme that promotes individual development for instance through talks with People Development and the exchange between graduates. All in all, the design of the graduate programme is thus perfectly suited to the needs of job starters.
