RWE Renewables Ireland (RWE) has been in Ireland since 2016 and has two offices, one in Kilkenny City and one in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin.

RWE has 4 operational projects including an operational wind farm Dromadda Beg in Co Kerry, 2 battery storage facilities in Co Dublin and Co Monaghan and the Airborne Wind Test site in Co Mayo. Projects in development include 2 offshore wind farms, 10 onshore wind farms and a further battery storage facility. We are also looking to develop solar projects in the future.
RWE’s objective is to be a long-term energy partner for Ireland during the country’s transition to carbon neutrality. In line with this, RWE is aiming to further expand its portfolio in Ireland and is actively seeking new opportunities to partner and develop renewable energy projects and technologies.
Airborne Wind Energy is a new type of wind energy technology that RWE is testing in Ireland in collaboration with its technology partner Kitepower, its partners in Mayo County Council and the MegaAwe Project, with funding from Interreg North West Europe.
The site in Bangor Erris was chosen after an extensive global search for a suitable location to develop this technology and received planning permission earlier in 2023 to allow the Kitepower device to fly. With low capital expenditure and less materials, airborne wind could have an important role in helping drive down the cost of energy further.
The technology can be used onshore as well as offshore and in combination with other technologies such as solar electricity generation and would be an important technology for RWE, complementing its existing renewables portfolio of wind, solar energy and battery storage.
More than 30 employees across our onshore and offshore sectors develop, build, operate and maintain our renewables projects. Our experienced team comprises skilled project managers, project engineers and technicians, as well as many other experts in different fields as RWE creates jobs within the local economy during each phase of any project.
