Steam and electricity

Since 1997, the CCGT plant located on BASF’s Ludwigshafen site has been supplying BASF with steam and RWE's interconnected grid with electricity. Since October 2012 the CCGT plant has been owned by BASF SE. It is operated by RWE Generation SE.

Ludwigshafen is the world's biggest interconnected BASF location, where some 350 chemical production facilities are closely interlocked across approximately ten square kilometres and, in many respects, are both suppliers to and recipient of products from one another.

RWE Generation also organises guided tours of the plant. Should you be interested, please contact Dr. Manfred Schäfer.

Crucial component in the integrated energy supply system

The CCGT plant is a crucial component in the integrated energy supply system at the location whose job it is to cover the annual demand of approximately six billion kilowatt hours of electric energy and 18 million tonnes of steam both efficiently and in line with the production facilities' availability requirements.

The plant concept

The plant consists mainly of two gas turbines, two unfired waste-heat steam generators and one back-pressure extraction turbine. The gas turbines have an electric output of 175 MW and 167.5 MW respectively. The steam turbine was designed for an electric output of 72 MW. In full-load operations, the plant – after deduction of its own requirements – generates 402.5 MW electric output and 533 t/h 6-bar steam.
