Chris Johnston

Group Head of Materials and Head of the Centre of Competence Process Safety

Chris is a specialist in Metallurgy and Group Head of the UK  Materials Group with 30 years’ experience in the power generation industry. He is accustomed to working in multi-functional teams to provide commercially focused technical solutions to structural integrity risks and operational issues. The Materials Group provides technical advice to the business as part of existing operations or for asset enhancement projects, e.g. CCGT flexibility Business Improvement Projects in all plant areas on Metallurgy, Welding and Stress Analysis.

Chris graduated with a BSc. (Hons) degree in Materials Science and went on to complete a Master of Philosophy. He now manages his team to deliver the Business Plan, which involves a mixture of management competence, technical knowledge and project delivery.

As a Head of RWE’s Process Safety Centre of Competence, he supports the assets in assurance in keeping people and plant safe during operation as defined by the RWE Generation 'Process Safety Directive'. The Directive is based on legal requirements for UK, Germany and The Netherlands, using the following activities: Process Safety Management System; Operational Support; Integrity Assurance; Inspection and Non Destructive Testing management; Acceptance of or liaison with the Competent Person roles (User Inspectorate).
